Recent research into the gut microbiome - the collection of beneficial and potentially harmful bacteria which live inside our colon - is one of the most exciting areas of clinical medicine today.
Beneficial bacteria perform a host of functions, breaking down plant fibres and polyphenols to produce many essential, and protective compounds. Polyphenols are plant derived chemicals found in large amounts in coloured plants like berries and green leafy vegetables.
By eating them not only do the bacteria flourish, we do too, as the bacteria transform the polyphenols into active compounds which improve the health and function of our gut, brain, cardiovascular system, immune system, and hormones. For example, if you are eating plants which contain more lignans
and isoflavones to help ease the symptoms of the menopause, you need the beneficial bacteria to transform them from having a weak oestrogenic effect into metabolites which have a stronger one.
Diversity Is Key
A healthy gut microbiome has a diverse range of bacteria and diet plays a major role in establishing and maintaining this diversity. What bacteria crave is a huge variety of
fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, lentils, beans, herbs and spices!

Advanced Microbiome DNA Sequencing
We offer the most advanced microbiome testing currently available using DNA sequencing of genetic material rather than traditional bacterial culturing techniques. This test is particularly helpful to those suffering from IBS, IBD, autoimunne conditions, neurological conditions, depression, chronic fatigue,
fibromyalgia, SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), and any chronic disease. The list of associated disorders is literally growing month by month as is the number of biochemical links between the gut and other organs in the body. If your bad bacteria outnumber the beneficial ones, as well as having a major impact on gut health, there is a negative effect on brain function as the brain is directly linked to the gut via the vagus nerve.
There is also an impact on your imunne health, as the intestinal wall contains approximately 70% of the cells which make up the imunne system.
An essential aspect of the first part of the test are the imunne markers. These provide vital information about your imunne function along the intestinal wall, and potential loss of integrity of the lining of the gut, which alters how different bacteria can effect the rest of the body. The second part of the test assesses 63 bacterial, fungal and parasitic markers, including SIBO related bacteria, and H Pylori, the bacteria which is often associated with both stomach and duodenal ulcers.
